Amara's First Birthday

I have photographed many people in my time as a photographer but none who smile as much as Amara. She was such a happy little girl on her birthday as I believe she is on most days. Ever playing, discovering, curious, impressing, and smiling brighter than the sun. She also has an amazing ability of looking someone straight in the eyes as she tries to communicate with them through a toy, an action or a pose.

There was plenty to be happy about with having your first birthday party in a park surrounded by friends, family, presents and food. All the while I was photographing, rolling around and observing everyone, I had a grin covering my face from ear to ear. This was simply a birthday you had to attend.

And then there was the smash cake, where do I begin... I am not entirely sure where this originated from but it has well and truly become a fad for kids birthday parties. All around Perth every kids birthday party I have photographed, smash cake has been on the menu. I will tell you a little secret though, every child reacts differently. I mean wouldn't you? You're planted in front of this cake with everyones eyes on you anticipating your next move. I must admit it is a nice addition to the party, getting everyone together as the child smashes, eats, cries and gets disinterested by the cake.

Grandmothers, family, friends and mothers all want to get involved when celebrating a young souls first birthday. These people are the key ingredients to ensuring that everyone is having a joyous time and is well looked after.

Harold Boas Gardens was the perfect setting for a first birthday as it was inclusive of both adults and children. The day was predicted for rain, so the shining sun was welcomed. We had a nice cocoon in the middle of the city surrounded by trees and greenery. This set the tone for a more laid back and family orientated afternoon filled with fun and laughter. Celebrations at this time of day compliments the photographs with lovely light and vibrant colour.

It was a special day and I am grateful to have been apart of it. I have new found friends, a beautiful experience andimages that will last multiple lifetimes.
