Creative Barber Shoot - The Christening of the New Studio

The queen’s birthday was a celebration of Adam’s new creative studio. Bringing in lights, cameras and plenty of action, courtesy of Krystal the barber. We worked with the colourful shed to create something that everyone could be happy with. It was a lot of fun capturing the essence of Krystal’s business, combining the creative vision and we could see her personality really shine through in this shoot.

Capturing the essence of Krystal and her business was the main goal in this photoshoot, as it is in every other. As these photos were going on her social media account, I didn’t want to make them as ‘commercial’ as some other shoots that I’ve done for larger businesses, and I wanted them to be a bit more unique for Krystal.

Krystal came prepared with a wide selection of props to use in the photoshoot including her electric razor seen in this photo. Her props drew interest by adding more story and character to every photograph. They demonstrated her skill with different tools, and added to her credibility as a barber. Krystal even brought in a barber stool and while it wasn’t easy to manoeuvre, it was a subtle element to bolster our messaging.

Picking and choosing different gels for this shoot resulted in some really dynamic and interesting photos. Originally the gels weren’t planned but it’s easy to see how much they brought out Krystal’s soul and just added that extra bit to her photoshoot. We used a combination of magenta, blue and brought in some red at one point working in with the coloured wood behind her to make more of an impact. You can see the difference in these two photos, while the yellow-brown tones of the photo taken without gels makes Krystal the centrepiece, the other two taken with the gels really made a difference and brought out some beautiful colours in the studio.

This was a photo I just had to include. Something unexpected but ultimately quite interesting, was Adam’s antique chest. Something of a family mystery, we didn’t really know what was inside or even why it was in the studio in the first place, but we were was determined to try a couple of photos with it.

Since this shoot was loosely planned to leave a lot of space for trying different things. This freedom to add and take away elements until we were happy with the results. This ended up with Adam bringing out his old smoke machine, almost unused saved for his kids’ parties and hang outs. Adding the smoke was a great idea accentuating the impact of the coloured lights and powder. It created an ethereal feel to some of the photos, bringing the subject out from the background even more.
